Self-Portrait
Mathias Alten was a German-American Impressionist painter. Born in Germany, Alten came to the United States at the age of 17 and began working as a painter. He created portraits, still life and allegorical subjects, as well as landscapes. He received a number of commissions from private patrons, as well as the government, and was awarded U.S. citizenship in 1898.

Floral Still Life
Around the turn of the century, Alten traveled to Europe where he studied at the Academie Colorossi, as well as the Academie Julien in France. He would again return to Europe in the 1910s and the 1920s, where he studied in the Netherlands and Spain.

Upon his return to the U.S. in the 1920s, Alten began exhibiting nationwide in Chicago, New York and Detroit. Towards the end of the 1920s, Alten?s color palette lightened up dramatically, and he began to travel to Taos, New Mexico and Tarpon Springs, Florida as well as the California coast.

Figures on a Beach
Though he traveled extensively, Alten made his home base in Grand Rapids, MI. As a result, many of his paintings depict the Grand River and the Michigan countryside, which are often featured in his landscapes. Today his paintings are housed in public and private collections worldwide, and perhaps in your own home.
