William P. Babcock was a 19^th century American artist noted for his figure paintings as well as biblical scenes, classical scenes and mythological subjects. He was an expatriate born in Boston who spent most of his life in France. He became one of the first Americans to study with Thomas Couture in Paris in 1847, and also studied with artists affiliated with the Barbizon school.
