Born in Dijon, France, Henri Bouchard was a sculptor. Despite being surrounded by new styles in the sculpting world, Bouchard was generally a classical sculptor, choosing mythological figures as his subjects.
Bouchard would also create monuments, relief designs in buildings and statues representing French history and culture. He studied in Rome and dedicated himself to realistic sculpture.
Strangely, one of his works entitled “To the Glory of the French Colonizing Genius” in Algeria went missing and hasn’t been seen since.
Bouchard’s bronzes are very rare indeed, and he would sell them himself out of his workshop in Montparnasse.
Sadly, Bouchard has been nearly forgotten in the art world. Though his sculptures are beautiful, perhaps they didn’t catch the attention of art critics and collectors because of the popularity of more modern sculpture in his day.
Today Bouchard’s work can be found at the Metropolitan of N.Y. and the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, and perhaps in a few lucky personal collections.
