Antonio Canova was an 18th century Italian Neoclassical painter and sculptor. He was best known for his marble sculptures that art historians have said were hailed for their delicate renditions of nude flesh. Canova's work has been credited as being the epitome of Neoclassical sculpture and as the refined return of classical sculpture after the long reign of highly dramatic Baroque art.

Most of Canova´s sculptures feature mythological figures such as Cupid and Psyche, The Three Graces and
other religious and fantastical characters. He visited London, Naples, Venice and Rome during his career and was commissioned by a number of wealthy and powerful patrons in his lifetime. He died due to complications with his ribs at the age of 64 as a result of his lifelong use of the carving tools that helped him to create his beautiful masterpieces.
