Juan Carreño de Miranda was a Spanish painter of the Baroque period, also known as the Golden Era of painting in Spain. Carreño was born in Avilés in Asturia before moving ot Madridwith his family in 1623. Carreño began his art training in the late 1620s, first studying under Pedro de las Cuevas and Bartolomé Roman.

Carreño soon received important commissions, including a number of pieces for the cloister of Doña María de Aragón in the cathedral, El Rosario. Carreño’s early projects gained the attention of Diego Velázquez, possibly the most renowned Spanish artist of the Baroque period. Carreño has been criticized for imitating Velazquez’s style, though many Baroque artists demonstrated a similar aesthetic in their work.

In 1658, Carreño was chosen as an assistant for the royal commission to paint in the Alcázar Palace (the Royal Palace of Madrid). Carreño’s strong work put him next in line for a position as court painter. Several years later, after the death of Sebastian de Herrera in 1971, Carreño became the official painter of the queen.

Carreño spent the next several years painting portraits of royalty. Most commonly painted subject included Carlos II, the Duchess of Feria, the Duke of Leoma and the Queen Marian of Austria.

While Carreño did not wish to be knighted by the court, he was held in high esteem for his exemplary work. Carreño had several assistants, including Ledesma and Sotomayor, Mateo Cerezo, Cabezalero and Donoso.
