Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki was an 18th century German painter and engraver. He was known as the most popular illustrator in Prussia during his lifetime, though he is best known as an engraver. Chodoweicki painted a number of oil paintings as well, his most famous being "The Departure of Jean Calais." He also created book illustrations for a number of well known stories, including Don Quixote and Shakespears plays.
