Pedro Coronel
(1923-1985)

Pedro Coronel was born in the city of Zacatecas, Mexico in 1923. During the 1940s Coronel moved to Mexico City to study fine art at La Esmeralda National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving.

Coronel travelled to Paris as a student to visit the workshop of the painter Victor Brauner and the sculptor Constantin Brancusi. Both European artists influenced Coronel’s later work.

Coronel returned to Mexico to further his career as an artist. Coronel’s first solo-exhibition was at the Galería Proteo in Mexico City. Coronel’s exhibition drew the attention of poet, Octavio Paz. Coronel was soon known throughout intellectual and artistic circles of Mexico.

Coronel died from a stroke at the age of 62. To honor the great artist, Coronel’s funeral was held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and was attended by political officers as well as his fellow artists.
