Vincent Courdouan
(1810-1893)
|
Vincent Courdouan was born in Toulan,
France in the same home where he would die at the age of
83. The street on which this house stood now bears his
name. Courdouan earliest artistic training in Toulan
took place in the workshop of Felix Brun where he
learned how to draw. Courdouan would eventually move to
Paris to study under portrait painter Paul Guerin.
However, due to homesickness, Courdouan does not stay in
Paris long and returns to Toulan. |

Like so many landscape
painters of the day, Courdouan applied the plein air
technique to his paintings. He would eventually adopt a
Naturalist style of painting, which was very Realist,
but also embraced the light of the Impressionists.
However, he mainly worked in watercolors and pastels and
completed sketches until 1846 when he first started to
work in oil paint. Courdouan’s home in Toulan gave the
artist access to beautiful sea coast and all that the
Mediterranean had to offer. |

Although Courdouan
would later travel to both Algeria and Egypt, these
trips did not have a massive effect on his work.
However, he created enough work as a result of these
trips to be considered among the Orientalists. |

Aside from his
beautiful provincial landscapes, Courdouan was also
known for his paintings of naval scenes. Like so many
other artists, Courdouan would also become a professor
and taught drawing. |

Courdouan is
considered one of the finest provincial landscape
painters of the Riviera of his time, among other artists
from the Toulan School like Bertrand and Dauphin. Today
his work is housed all over France, and particularly in
Toulan. |
