Francesco Curradi was a Baroque-era Italian artist born in Florence, and had been called one of the most important painters in the first half of the 17th century by some art historians. Like many other old master artists of his day, Curradi created Romanticized compositions featuring mythological, literary or historical figures in dramatic shadowing and bold colors.

The Triumph of Judith

Curradi began his artistic training under the tutelage of Giovanni Naldini Batiste, creating paintings and commissions for churches. In his early years, Curradi also created decorative ornamentation for public works, such as the bridge in the city Cristina di Lorena. Curradi was also a student at the Academy of Design in the late 1500’s.

It wasn’t until the late 1610’s to early 1620’s that Curradi reached full maturity as an artist. During this time, Curradi became associated with other artists at the Buonarroti House. He lived his entire life in Florence, and continued to receive commissions from churches and church officials as well as prominent Florentine families. He died in Florence at the fairly old age of 91, and is buried in his family tomb at Saint Gaetano.

Study of a Naked Man, attributed

Many of Curradi’s known works are attributed to him, due to the fact that it is often hard to be 100% certain about pieces created hundreds of years ago. For that reason, it is quite possible that unauthenticated work by Curradi could still exist somewhere, either wrongly attributed to another artist or as a work by an unknown artist. Today, Curradi’s work is housed in prominent collections throughout the world, and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about a 17th century Italian masterpiece in your family’s estate? Contact us…it could be by Francesco Curradi.
