Nicolas de Largilliere was an influential
French academic portrait painter. Scholars believe that
he painted nearly 2000 portraits, a massive
accomplishment for any artist. He was born in Paris and
trained in Antwerp and later set up a studio in London
with Sir Peter Lely. |

| De Largilliere specialized in portraits
of non-aristocratic individuals, including writers,
philosophers and musicians, although he did paint for
the nobility as well. He became the director of the
Academie Royale in 1686, and trained important later
painters such as Jean-Baptiste Oudry. |
