Dine was part of an avant-garde group of performance artists who created “Happenings”. Along with artists Claes Oldenburg, Allan Kaprow and John Cage, Dine brought a new, animated and clever form of art making onto the scene. The Happenings did their first performance in 1959 and continued to work into the 1960s.

In 1962 Dine showed in a historic show “New Painting of Common Objects” at the Norton Simon Museum. This early Pop Art exhibition also included such names as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Edward Ruscha and Wayne Thiebaud. Art historians claim that this singular show transformed art in America.

Despite Dine’s success in America he moved to London from 1967 to 1971 where he continued to develop his style and work among an international scene of artists. When Dine returned to the United States he initiated thematic drawing series and number of sculptures. Dine is known for using repeated images in his pieces such as hearts, bathrobes, flowers and birds.

Dine’s graphic images have become icons within American popular culture. Dine’s work has been shown in major museums across the United States and Europe. The Walker Art Center held a retrospective to honor Dine’s lengthy artistic career. Printshops continue to produce highly desirable images by Dine.
