Portrait of Mme Bruyere
| Antoine Jean Gros was French portrait painter, and a student of David. He was accused of being sympathetic towards the royalists during the French Revolution, and was forced to leave France . This led him to live in Italy , where he became a successful miniaturist in Florence and Genoa.

Lt. Charles Legrand
| While living in Italy , Gros was introduced to Napoleon, who became one of his best known subjects. Gros returned to France in 1799 and frequently participated in the Salons until his death in 1835. In his later years, Gros attempted to paint mythological scenes in the Neoclassical style, but found little success. Depressed due to his failures as an artist, Gros drowned himself in the Seine River in 1835.
