Peder Severin Kroyer was a Norwegian-born Danish
painter, and is considered to be one of the most famous
“Painters of Light” during the 19th century.

Kroyer studied at the
Copenhagen Academy of Arts where he established his
ideals for creating compositions that showed a harmony
between beauty and nature. Kroyer frequently visited
Paris, where he was a student of Bonnat and became
influenced by the work of the Impressionists, which
further heightened his development of the use of light. |

Kroyer visited Skagen in
1882, and returned their regularly thereafter during the
summer to complete the major part of his works. Kroyer
eventually became the leader of the colony of artists at
Skagen. |

During his lifetime,
Kroyer was a fairly versatile artist and created many
different types of art in many different mediums from
sculpture to engraving and watercolor, and created
portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. He was awarded
many prestigious awards during his lifetime, and was
named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1888. |
