Virgin and Child, c.1780
One of the prominent colonial Venezuelan artists of the 18th century was Juan Pedro Lopez. Although he was born in the Canary Islands, he is still considered on of the greatest Venezuelan artist of all time, and the grandfather of Andre Bello. Renowned for his sculpture of St. Joseph, which serves as the afterpiece for the Caracas Cathedral, his work was often concentrated on religious imagery.

Nuestra Senora Del Socorro De Valencia
Both a painter and a sculptor, Lopez, like most other Venezuelan artists of the time, was commissioned mostly on behalf of the church. Compositions of the Immaculate Conception and the Virgin Mary are common amongst his catalogue, and are generally in the Baroque style. A great many of his paintings are still hanging today in the cathedral in Caracas.

Immaculate Conception
In March of 2004, one of Lopez's pieces was stolen from the Museo de Art Colonial in Caracas, Venezuela. The painting "Nuestra Senora de Atocha", an oil painting on cedar wood panel featured the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus and is still missing to this date.
