| Domenico Morelli was an Italian artist, and is considered by some art scholars to be one of the most important artists to come out of Naples during the second half of the 19th century. Morelli created sketches and paintings with romantic and historical themes in the classical style, often incorporating gods, goddesses and exotic characters into his compositions. |

| Morelli was known for being an academic artist, and displayed great ability in figure study as well as ornamentation. Ignoring his mother’s wishes to become a priest, Morelli enrolled in the Accademia in Naples in 1836. His earliest works show evidence of his devotion to the academic style as well as his natural skill as a young artist. Morelli won a fellowship to study in Rome in 1848, and that same year, be became involved in the insurrection against the Bourbons in Naples, where he was imprisoned and wounded. During the 1950’s, Morelli traveled to Florence, and participated in discussions on Macchiaioli and Realism. Morelli is credited with encouraging the Macchiaioli group to study directly from nature. This in turn helped Morelli to become more creative with color and to have a less restricted style of his own. |
