Henry Siddons Mowbray was born in Alexandria, Egypt to English parents. Mowbray was orphaned at an early age and sent to live with an American uncle in Massachusetts. Mowbray spent a year studying at the United States Military Academy at West Point before leaving for France to study art.

Mowbray worked in the studio of Leon Bonnat in Paris and developed his own artistic style. When Mowbray completed his studies he returned to the United States, settling in New York City. Mowbray started making connections in the art scene and became a full member of the National Academy of Design.

Mowbray was accepted into the international art scene and began exhibiting in Europe and New York. Mowbray was commissioned to do decorative painting in libraries and government building. Commissions included the residence of F.W. Vanderbilt and the University Cluball in New York City.

Mowbray taught at various institutions such as the Art Students League in New York and the American Academy in Rome. Mowbray eventually was appointed of the American Academy and divided much of his time between New York and Rome.
