| William Mulready was an Irish-born genre painter who spent most of his career in London. Mulready was born in Ennis, County Clare but moved to London with his family in 1792. The artists showed such talent that he entered the Royal Academy at only fourteen years of age. |

| Mulready is best known for his rural landscape and genre paintings, in which he depicted everyday life scenes in England. In addition to large-scale paintings, Mulready produced a number of illustrations for Tales from Shakespeare, which was widely distributed during the Victorian era. |

| Mulready married another well-known British painter, Elizabeth Varley, who became popular for her landscapes. The artistic couple had three children together before their relationship started to weaken. Due to Mulready’s commitment to the Catholic Church, he was unable to divorce, despite his strong desire to separate from Varley. |

| By 1815, Mulready was named associate at the Royal Academy and won an award from the French Legion of Honor. As Mulready’s popularity mounted he continued to receive illustration commissions and created “Mulready Stationary” for the postal service. |

| After Mulready’s death a monument was erected in his memory at the Kensal Green Cemetary. His paintings can now be found at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Gallery among other prestigious collections. |
