Eduardo Paolozzi was a Scottish artist who came from an Italian immigrant family in north Edinburgh. Paolozzi is one of the most famous Scottish artists and is remembered for his playful sculptures and collages.

Many of Paolozzi’s family members died when a ship carrying them to Canada, the Arandora Star, was sunk by s German U-boat. Paolozzi remained in the United Kingdom and studied at the Edinburgh College of Art, St. Martin’s School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London. Paolozzi finally finished his studied in 1947, and proceeded to move to Paris for a few years. In Paris Paolozzi met artists, such as Alberto Giacometti, Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi and Georges Braque, who influenced his development as an artist.

By the 1950s, Paolozzi moved back to London and set up his studio, filled with materials and collected objects. Paolozzi worked with a variety of media, but it was his silkscreen prints that led to his initial fame. His prints took on a colorful, collage-like aesthetic, containing a variety of pop imagery.

In 1952 Paolozzi founded the Independent Group, which is thought to have led to the American Pop Art movement. As Paolozzi’s career progressed he became known primarily as a sculptor, creating monumental, statuary works. His sculptures were often deconstructed human forms that seemed to reference machinery and the industrial age.

Once Paolozzi’s career was established, he was invited to teach at a number of Universities, including University of California, Berkeley, the Royal College of Art, Fachhochschule, Cologne and the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Munich.

In 1979 Paolozzi was elected to the Royal Academy, a few years after being awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) by the British order of chivalry. In 1986 Paolozzi joined the office of Her Majesty’s Sculptor in Ordinary for Scotland. A few years later, Paolozzi was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and awarded the KBE.
