Jean Pierre Pequignot was a French born landscape painter who spent much of his artistic career in Naples, Italy. Much like fellow French born, Italian based painter Pierre Jacques Volaire, Pequignot also studied under Joseph Vernet. Pequignot also studied under Jacques-Louis David and at the French Academy.

Pequignot traveled to Rome where he became friends with Girodet, and were eventually forced to flee to Naples in 1793, where Pequignot would remain for the rest of his life. While in Naples, he would create fantasy landscape paintings, featuring women sleeping by lakes, mythological figures, towering trees and narrow paths.
