| Peyron won the Prix de Rome in 1773, beating out rival Jacques-Louis David. Peyron and David would have a life long rivalry, though today, Peyron is considerably less known. |
Mourning

| Peyron spent seven years in Rome after winning the grand prix, and he became highly influenced by the work of the Old Italian masters. He developed a very dark palette and mainly painted religious and historical subjects. Many of these paintings feature death or a funeral as the subject of the composition. |
