Jean Restout was an 18th century French artist, and mainly painted in the Neoclassical style. He was born in Rouen to a family of painters and studied at the Royal Academy. Restout won the Prix de Rome in 1717, however, he did not accept the prestigious award and opted to stay in France rather than travel to Italy.

Even though Restout stayed behind, he continued to exhibit at the salons, create altarpieces, and also designed tapestries for the Gobelins Factory. Restout had a son, Jean Bernard Restout, who was also an artist.
