For nearly 400 years, art students and appreciators have studied his style and subject matter, and emulated his techniques. For this reason, Rembrandt is perhaps one of the most frequently copied and forged artists of all.

Through scholars at The Rembrandt Research Project, we now know that only some 300 oil paintings by Rembrandt are authentic. Please feel free to read more about this above in “Fakes and Forgeries.” You can also learn more about Rembrandt’s style in “Periods and Style,” read his “Bio” and peruse a compilation online “Gallery” above.

Everyone wants to think that their painting is a Rembrandt…whether because of the prestige, or simply because they hope that they have a valuable painting. Though research has disproved many paintings as being Rembrandt in recent years, the possibility still remains for more of his paintings to surface. Rembrant’s career spanned over four decades, and 300 paintings is a relatively small oeuvre for such a long, illustrious career. There are no doubt authentic Rembrandt paintings hanging on walls and tucked away in attics around the world…it’s just a matter of time before someone discovers their hidden secrets.
