Besides a period between 1607 and 1613, when Luis Tristan lived in Italy, he spent much of his life in Toledo. Luis Tristan focused on religious themes paintings , commonly choosing saints as subjects for his paintings. Luis Tristan’s paintings are noted for their dramatic lighting, common in Spanish painting at the time. Luis Tristan would show illuminated figures in front of a darkened non- descript background. Luis Tristan painted altar images in churches as well as portraits for private collections. Luis Tristan painted the main altar in the Catedral de la Mancha in Yepes, Spain. The altar, painted in 1616, contained sixteen scenes depicting the life of Jesus and eight portraits of saints. |
