| Hugo van der Goes has been called the greatest Netherlandish painter of the late 15th century. Very little is known about his life prior to 1467 when he became a master in the painters’ guild at Ghent. Van der Goes had been given many commissions for the town of Ghent and by 1475 he was the dean of the painters’ guild.

| It is said that van der Goes suffered greatly from depression and in 1481, had a mental breakdown. Though he recovered from this breakdown, he died the following year of unknown causes.

| The only painting by van der Goes that is securely documented is a large triptych of the Nativity, famously known as the Portinari Altarpiece in Florence. This piece shows his influence by the Italian Renaissance masters, as well as his talent with oil paints and ornamental detail.

His last work is generally thought to have been “Death of the Virgin,” which art critics call a beautiful a poignant piece, despite the torment that the artist was undoubtedly feeling at the time.

Van der Goes did not sign any of his work, as was typical of painters during his era, and most of his surviving works are merely attributed to him. Though it would be very rare to find one of his oil painting today, it is always possible, and it is certainly possible that one of his sketches may surface.
