During Wall’s lifetime, landscape painting was just starting to reach its popularity in America. He is noted by art historians as being one of the major forces behind the Hudson River style of landscape painting. Wall’s watercolors of New York City and the Hudson River were published as the “Hudson River Portfolio.”

Despite the fact that Wall lived much of his life in Ireland, he remains historically as one of the forerunners of American landscape art. Though he was not particularly known for painting portraits and still life, certainly some of those bearing his name may surface in either New England or Ireland.
