Whittredge exhibited his masterful work frequently and guided other aspiring artists. He served as president of the National Academy of Design and was on the selection committee for both the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and the 1878 Paris Exposition. Later moving to New Jersey in 1880, Whittredge continued to paint as long as possible. Whittredge's paintings are in prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC.
