Wutky was a teaching artist, employed by his alma mater, the Vienna Academy. He worked and instructed in the late Baroque manner of painting, which focused on idealized landscapes. Wutky loved painting in nature and spent much of his free time in the outdoors. He was a skilled painter of cascades and woods but preferred the challenge and intensity of painting volcanic eruptions. Wulky frequented the active volcano Mount Vesuvius, located near Naples, Italy. He accompanied the English scientist William Hamilton in his volcanic expeditions, venturing dangerously close to volcanic craters. Hamilton's expeditions have since been revered for their scientific findings. |
