For a painting to be authentic, nearly everything about it has to be consistent with the time, place, style, subject, technique, support, medium, format, age and additional elements that would all pertain to such a painting.
Things have to fall neatly into place.
If it is dated 1915 then it cannot be signed the way the artist did 40 years later.
If he had never left the mountains when it was painted then it cannot be a harbor scene.
If he is not known to have ever painted on canvas then it cannot be an oil on canvas.
If he only used French art supplies, then the supplies used cannot be American.
If he painted it in 1890 then the people cannot be dressed as in 1920.
The list goes on and on.
Of course, an exception is possible. People do unexpected things, but by and large, everything has to be consistent.
One of the main tools in authenticating a painting involves checking if everything is consistent.
