With the use of technologically advanced digital image analysis techniques, most of the examination work that had to be done in the past with a magnifier in hand, is now done on a computer screen.
Consider for example that the human eye is only capable of distinguishing between 30 and 50 different shades of gray. The exact number is dependent upon the person's age and eyesight. A typical digital camera is capable of recording 256 different shades of gray. Much of this subtle information often goes unnoticed by the human observer because of the eye's inability to distinguish the fine nuances of tone. When an image is recorded in color, the human eye has an even more difficult time trying to distinguish between subtle tonal and color differences.
With digital image processing, contrast, brightness, intensity and colors can be manipulated to make visible what would otherwise be invisible to the human eye.
This is why crime investigators have long used crime scene photography to show them what their eyes cannot see.
The situation is the same regarding the authentication of paintings and other works of art.
Yet, an authentication would not be complete and a doubt would always persist, if we did not physically examine the painting. This is why as a last step before issuing the certificate of authenticity and its supporting report, we make arrangements with you to examine the painting.
