Imagine you find a 19th century painting signed by an important artist.
One way to research if it is authentic would be to check if it has ever been exhibited in the past.
Obviously, if we can show that the painting was in an exhibition in Paris in 1875, we will have demonstrated that it is authentic.
This is what historical research is about. It consists in looking for evidence in the past. This evidence comes in many forms: exhibition records, illustrations in publications, mentions and critics in the art press, references in letters, diaries, memoirs, contemporary writings about the artist, art gallery records, auction records, private collector records, inventories, artist' estate records.
It is very powerful research because just a little piece of historic information is oftentimes sufficient to establish that a painting is authentic.
