The masterpiece syndrome

Unless your work is a "masterpiece" many experts will reject it immediately. Obviously, not all paintings are "masterpieces". Even the most famous of artists produced only a few recognized "masterpieces." The reason for the masterpiece syndrome is that art education is based on looking at and studying masterpieces.

is also based on showing masterpieces. The web is no different and when you do a search for any artist the same masterpieces are shown a hundred times. Museums only buy the best and as a result their curators spend a lifetime walking along galleries filled with the best. When an exhibition is organized, naturally it is a selection of the finest works of the artist.

This is often why, when you try to get your second rate or third rate painting authenticated, it is continuously rejected, because it is vastly inferior to the masterpieces everyone is familiar with.

In reality, the bulk of the production of nearly all artists consists of mediocre and average quality paintings. Most artists have long bad periods and short periods of excellence. Usually, the quality of what they produced when they started out is fairly low. Likewise, from the age of 50 until the end, production is generally mediocre. In between, artists have many years when they lacked inspiration, or were sick, or were drinking so much that they could not function. The point is that for the majority of artists masterpieces were exceptions, they only produced a few, in a mass of ordinary or even bad paintings.

One of the great difficulties in finding a truly competent expert is that you must find someone very well versed in the ordinary, the mediocre, the poor, the bad, the worst, the artist produced.

It is only from this knowledge base that one can determine what is authentic and what is not.
