Reviews of Rejections

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, possibly a fake Rembrandt

It is extremely common for genuine and authentic paintings to be rejected, in particular when all you did was to send photographs to one of the big auction houses.

Whether you contacted an auction house or a specialist, these are the most common problems which result in a quick rejection:

  • Insufficient information was provided.

  • The quality of the photographs was poor.

  • The general presentation of your inquiry was unprofessional.

  • You said or wrote something which triggered an alarm bell. They think you are trying to pass on a fake.

  • The "specialist" was not a specialist in paintings. He is a silver specialist.

  • The painting was rejected by the secretary opening the mail. The specialist was busy.

  • The painting is not one of the classic works of the artist. It is different from his well known paintings.

  • It is not in the catalogue raisonne.

  • It was rejected after glancing at one photo for about 3 seconds because it was done as a free appraisal.

  • The value of the painting would be very high if it is authentic and the people you contacted are afraid of making a mistake.

  • The "specialist" was having a bad hair day.

The list goes on.

If your painting has been rejected for a frivolous reason or due to lack of attention and research, we suggest that you contact us. We will give it the time and attention it deserves.
