Dr. Jean-David Jumeau-Lafond

Expertise: Carlos Schwabe, Symbolist painters, late 19th century paintings.

Paris, France. Dr. Jean-David Jumeau-Lafond lives in Paris and studied art history at Clermont-Ferrand and Paris universities. His doctoral thesis, which included the reasoned catalogue of Schwabe's works, was defended in 1994. His interest in contemporary art led him to take part in various publications and exhibitions in this field. He has organized several artistic events in support of young artists and art publishing.

His main and enduring interest, however, has been art from the end of the 19th century, with a particular emphasis on the Symbolist movement. Dr. Jumeau-Lafond is personally related to the painter, illustrator, mystical artist, and one of the emblematic figures of the fin-de-siecle Paris, Carlos Schwabe (1866-1926). For twenty years Jumeau-Lafond carried out thorough research on Schwabe, resulting in a book, published with the support of the Swiss Foundation Pro Helvetia, and being the first ever comprehensive monograph on the artist. Dr. Jumeau-Lafond's publications include many articles on Schwabe and his time, but also on the relations between the plastic arts and music. He has also written quite a bit in catalogues for museum exhibitions in Paris, Geneva, Mexico, Tokyo, and Budapest, to name a few. He was appointed Curator for the Carlos Schwabe exhibition arranged at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris in 1994. Dr. Jumeau-Lafond was General Curator for the exhibition, Les Peintres de lame, le Symbolisme idealiste en France, 1991-2001, and author of the book for the exhibition: The First Comprehensive Publication About This Artistic Movement. The exhibition was presented in five museums in Japan from April to November 2003 and in Denmark from September to November 2004. It will be presented in Tampere, Finland in November 2006 and in Holland in 2007. He was also curator of the 2006 exhibition, Un pais ideal (The French Idealist Landscape) in the Pampelune and Girona museums in Spain.

Dr. Jumeau-Lafond is currently engaged in collecting Schwabe's letters, publishing his research on the Symbolist artists Jeanne Jacquemin (1863-1938) and Charles-Marie Dulac, and in endeavors to contribute to a better understanding of Symbolism. He is a contributor to La Tribune de l'art. His other projects concern the history of art and musicography. Dr. Jumeau-Lafond is a member of the Societe des Gens de Lettres. He was made a "Chevalier" of the "Order of Arts and Letters" by the French "Ministre de la culture" in 1996.
