Information increases the value of art. The most important piece of information is of course who painted it or created it? This is not all. Who it belonged to in the past, in what circumstances it was created or for whom, what it represents (and this is not always obvious), what some of the elements in the composition are and what they mean, where and when it was exhibited, where it has been published, the relationship of the painting to other works; historical  significance, artistic merit, where and how it fits in the chronology of the artist, all of the answers to these questions increase importance, significance, desirability and the value of a work of art.
