Portrait #1 was painted by Albert Edelfelt in 1885. Edelfelt (1854-1905) was a Finnish artist. He was one of the first artists from Finland to become internationally famous. This portrait shows Pasteur diligently working in his laboratory.
It is not known whether there are additional authentic portraits of the scientist. Photography was in existence during his lifetime and this greatly affected the number of portraits of Pasteur, however, the possibility still exists.
