Buttura was born in France on November 29, 1841. Buttura was the son of Dr. Antoine Buttura, the physician of King Louis-Philippe. In 1861, Buttura studied under Biennourry and Barrisat at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Buttura later moved to the French Riviera where he lived until about 1894.

Buttura devoted himself exclusively to painting landscapes and monuments. From 1865 to 1901, Buttura exhibited at the Paris Salon of the Société des Artistes Francais. Even while traveling in Italy and the Middle East, Buttura would send paintings for exhibitions at the annual French Salon.

It is not frequent that Buttura’s paintings are seen in the market. The value of Buttura’s paintings has increased progressively during the last 100 years. The limited market activity shows that owners of Buttura paintings hold on to them for many years.
