Anton Čebej was a Slovenian baroque painter born in the town of Sturje. Čebej is best known for his religious paintings, such as “St. Leopold” and “The Death of Saint Joseph. While little is known about Čebejs personal life, scholars do know that he received artistic training in Venice. The influence of Italian painting can clearly be seen in his work. Čebej’s early frescoes, for example, show the influence of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

Čebej’s later work shows less Italian influence and is more akin to the work of Valentin Metzinger. Some historians presume that Čebej worked in Metzinger’s studio in Ljubljana.

While most of Čebej’s work has been found in Slovenia, paintings have also ben discovered in Croatia and Germany. A number of Anton Čebej’s paintings are in the collection of the National Gallery of Slovenia.
