art

Les Toits Sous La Neige, 1958

Andre Hambourg was a French post-Impressionist artist, known mostly for painting landscapes and cityscapes. Born in Paris, his first studies were in sculpture under the supervision of Niclausse. Hambourg was also a student briefly at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1927, and the following year held his first one-man show in Paris.

Le Soir sur la Lagune, Torcello

Hambourg won the Prix de la Villa Abd-el-Tif in 1933, which allowed him to travel and paint in North Africa. From 1933 to 1935, Hambourg resided in Algeria where he made great strides with the use of light in his paintings.

art

Fin de Jour, Place St. Marco, 1961

In the 1940s, like so many other artists, Hambourg was called to fight in World War II. During this time, he served as a war journalist, and became decorated after his return in 1945. Though there are few known paintings of his during this time, he surely created drawings and sketches while in the service. However, his time in the military did not seem to have an adverse reaction to his painting, and he continued to paint serene French landscapes.

art

La Plage, 1958

After the war, Hambourg continued to travel and exhibit his work world wide from Africa to Belgium, London, Chicago, New York, and even in California. Hambourg also gained much notoriety and decoration during his career, and was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1951.

art

Port Hornfleur watercolor

Although Hambourg is best known for his landscape oil paintings, he was a highly prolific and experimental artist whose work has been compared to that of Eugene Boudin. He worked in a number of mediums from watercolor to pastels and was also an expert illustrator, sculptor, engraver and lithographer.

art

Le Grande Regate, 1989

Today, Hambourg’s work is housed all over France at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, as well as in Hornfleur and Trouville. Since Hambourg traveled and exposed his work so extensively, and he continued painting well into the 1980’s, the possibility of owning one of his paintings is quite great.
