In 1917, de Laszlo was imprisoned and his health took a turn for the worse. He was then sent to a nursing home under house arrest until 1919 when his name was cleared. De Laszlo did not resume portrait painting until after World War I, so during these years, it is not likely that he created much art. However, once he was back to painting again, de Laszlo was hailed by some art critics as Europe’s leading portrait painter.

During his lifetime, de Laszlo had a number of prestigious awards bestowed upon him for his skill as a portrait painter. In 1900, he earned a grand gold medal at the Paris International Exhibition for his portrait of Pope Leo XIII, and was named a member of the Royal Victorian Order by Kind Edward VII in 1909. He traveled all over the world creating his large oeuvre of portraits, and was in high demand by royalty and affluent individuals. Though it is likely that he painted some landscapes, still life and other compositions, they are generally lesser known.
