Cozens painting, The Cloud

The Cloud

Alexander Cozens was an 18th century British painter. He was thought to be the first English painter to work entirely with landscapes, and invented the “blot” drawing method. This method was created by Cozens and was basically a way to turn an unintended blot of ink on a piece of paper into a work of art, via his imagination. Some art historians call this type of painting and drawing the pre-cursor to abstract expressionism.

Cozens was also a writer and draftsman, but was best known for his landscapes of the Alps and the Italian countryside. It is said that his work influenced Girtin and Turner, and today his paintings are housed in prestigious collections world wide.
