Hans Dahl is one of Norway’s most well known painters. He is best remembered for his genre and landscape paintings. Dahl was born in Granvin, Hardangerfjord in Western Norway, which was part of Sweden at the time.

As a young boy, Dahl revealed a talent for the arts but had to postpone his artistic training to serve in the Swedish army. Dahl served as a lieutenant until 1873, at which time he began his studies in Karlsruhe where Dahl was instructed by Hans Fredrik Gude and Wilhelm Riefstahl. After a few years in Karlsruhe, Dahl moved to Dusseldorf and continued to study under Eduard von Gebhardt and Wilhelm Sohn.

In 1888, Dahl moved to Berlin to but continued to summer in Norway at Balestrand, where he had a summer home. After 1919, Dahl lived in Balestrand full-time, where he remained until his death in 1937.
