CLAUDE LALANNE
1925–2019
COULD YOUR ARTWORK BE BY CLAUDE LALANNE?
Previously unknown works by important artists continue to emerge from private collections, estates, inheritances, and long-held family possessions. While authentic works by Claude Lalanne may be rare, every work deserves to be evaluated on its own merits rather than dismissed simply because it is unfamiliar or undocumented.
If you believe your sculpture, furniture piece, jewelry, decorative object, relief, drawing, or other work may be by Claude Lalanne, obtaining an independent professional opinion is the appropriate first step. Lalanne was a major French sculptor and designer whose work was closely inspired by plants, animals, and other organic forms. Working both independently and alongside her husband François-Xavier Lalanne under the collective name Les Lalanne, she became especially known for cast and electroplated botanical forms, bronze furniture, jewelry, mirrors, chandeliers, and surreal combinations of flora, fauna, and the human body.
We have specialized in the authentication of works attributed to Claude Lalanne since 2002. We issue Certificates of Authenticity (COAs), Authentication Reports, appraisals, valuations, provenance reports, and provide buying, selling, brokerage, and investment advisory services for collectors, attorneys, insurers, financial institutions, estates, museums, and private clients worldwide.
Getting started is straightforward. Simply send us photographs of the work together with its dimensions and any information you have regarding its history or ownership. After reviewing the material, we will recommend the most appropriate course of action.
AUTHENTICATION
Is this a Claude Lalanne?
From a single photograph of ordinary quality, we can often determine whether a work appears consistent with Lalanne’s work or whether it clearly does not. Her production includes sculptures, furniture, jewelry, mirrors, chandeliers, tables, chairs, decorative objects, and works incorporating botanical and animal forms, so the proposed date, material, dimensions, casting or fabrication technique, surface, edition information, signature, inscriptions, and provenance must all be considered.
What services do you provide?
We provide authentication, certification, Certificates of Authenticity (COAs), Authentication Reports, appraisals and valuations, provenance research, private sales and brokerage, investment advice, and analytical art market research.
Is it possible to discover a previously unknown Claude Lalanne today?
Yes. Lalanne maintained a long and productive career and continued creating sculpture into her nineties. Previously undocumented works, artist’s proofs, unique variants, jewelry, studies, furniture, and privately held objects can remain in collections, estates, family holdings, and collections that have not been publicly exhibited or thoroughly researched.
Do I need to get my Claude Lalanne authenticated?
Yes. Authentication is essential if you wish to sell your work for its full market value. It is also important for insurance, estate planning, charitable donations, financing, and many legal purposes.
Is it complicated to get a Claude Lalanne authenticated?
Not for you. For sculpture and furniture, send photographs from several angles, including the front, back, sides, top, base, and underside. Include close-up photographs of signatures, monograms, edition numbers, foundry marks, fabrication details, joins, feet, hardware, surface patination, and labels. For jewelry and smaller objects, include photographs of clasps, interiors, reverse surfaces, hallmarks, and measurements. The investigation itself is our responsibility.
How long does it take to authenticate a Claude Lalanne?
It depends on how much is already known about the work when we begin the investigation. In the simplest cases, authenticity can be confirmed within a couple of weeks. More complex cases may require several months.
How much does it cost to authenticate a Claude Lalanne?
From the low hundreds to the high thousands. It depends on how much is already known and documented, where relevant archives and comparative works are located, and whether travel or scientific testing is required.
Can a signature alone prove that a Claude Lalanne work is authentic?
No. A signature, monogram, foundry mark, or inscription is only one element of evidence and cannot establish authenticity by itself. It must be evaluated together with the work’s materials, casting or fabrication technique, dimensions, surface, chronology, edition information, provenance, and other physical and documentary characteristics.
Can an unsigned Claude Lalanne work still be authentic?
Yes. The absence of a visible signature does not by itself establish that a sculpture, object, piece of furniture, or jewelry is inauthentic. Attribution should be based on the complete body of evidence, including materials, construction, casting or electroplating technique, dimensions, provenance, and comparison with securely documented works.
What documents help authenticate a Claude Lalanne?
Any document that mentions, describes, illustrates, or refers to the work may assist the authentication. Historic photographs, invoices, correspondence, exhibition catalogues, gallery records, foundry documentation, fabrication records, collection catalogues, conservation reports, insurance documents, auction records, collection inventories, and previous ownership records can all contribute valuable evidence.
Can a Claude Lalanne work be authenticated from photographs?
Yes. High-quality photography is an extremely useful authentication tool and allows us to study form, casting, fabrication, botanical textures, surface patination, joins, signatures, monograms, edition numbers, foundry marks, labels, and other important characteristics remotely. When additional evidence is required, we may recommend an in-person examination. We examine works worldwide.
Is it always necessary to perform scientific analyses of a Claude Lalanne?
No. Many works can be authenticated through research, provenance investigation, comparative analysis, edition research, foundry research, and technical examination. Scientific testing is generally reserved for more difficult cases when questions remain concerning bronze alloys, copper, silver, gold, patinas, electroplating, solder, welding, resins, adhesives, coatings, or the age and composition of other materials.
Are botanical forms particularly important in Claude Lalanne authentication?
Yes. Plants, leaves, flowers, branches, fruit, and vegetables are fundamental to Lalanne’s work. She developed techniques that allowed natural specimens to become the basis for metal objects and sculptural surfaces. The botanical species, scale, texture, casting or electroplating technique, arrangement, surface, and relationship to documented examples can therefore provide important evidence.
Are cabbage sculptures important when authenticating Claude Lalanne?
Yes. The Choupatte, a cabbage combined with animal-like legs, became one of Lalanne’s most recognizable inventions. These works exist in different dimensions, dates, materials, and versions, making exact measurements, material, edition status, surface, signature, and provenance particularly important when evaluating an attributed example.
Are furniture and functional objects important in Claude Lalanne authentication?
Yes. Lalanne repeatedly blurred distinctions between sculpture, furniture, jewelry, and decorative art. Chairs, benches, tables, mirrors, chandeliers, lamps, and other functional objects can therefore form an important part of her oeuvre. Construction, dimensions, hardware, casting, surface treatment, edition information, and fabrication history should all be examined carefully.
Is jewelry important in Claude Lalanne authentication?
Yes. Jewelry formed a significant part of Lalanne’s practice, and her works include necklaces, bracelets, brooches, belts, body ornaments, and other wearable objects inspired by leaves, flowers, animals, and the human form. Metal, casting or electroplating method, clasp construction, dimensions, marks, edition information, and provenance can all be important.
Are electroplated natural forms important in Claude Lalanne authentication?
Yes. Lalanne became closely associated with processes that transformed real botanical forms into metallic objects. The resulting works can preserve remarkably detailed textures of leaves, branches, flowers, and other organic materials. Technical construction, metal deposition, joins, internal structure, finishing, and surface aging can therefore provide important evidence.
Are Claude Lalanne and François-Xavier Lalanne works the same?
No. Although Claude and François-Xavier exhibited together under the name Les Lalanne and shared a studio and artistic environment, they generally created their own works rather than functioning as a conventional collaborative studio. Claude became particularly associated with botanical forms, jewelry, electroplating, and intricate organic surfaces, while François-Xavier became especially known for sculptural animals and functional animal forms.
Are foundry marks and edition numbers important for Claude Lalanne?
Yes. Many sculptures and objects exist in editions, artist’s proofs, or documented variants. Edition number, artist’s proof designation, foundry or fabricator, dimensions, material, surface, inscriptions, and production date should therefore be compared carefully with securely documented examples.
What if my Claude Lalanne has no provenance?
Incomplete provenance is common. When provenance is incomplete, authentication relies more heavily on research, technical examination, photography, foundry and fabrication evidence, edition research, analysis of materials and markings, comparison with documented works, and, where appropriate, scientific testing.
Do you issue Certificates of Authenticity for Claude Lalanne works?
Yes. Upon completion of the authentication, we issue a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) together with a detailed and fully referenced Authentication Report.
APPRAISALS & VALUATIONS
How much is my Claude Lalanne worth?
We will appraise your work and determine its value. Date, subject, material, dimensions, condition, provenance, rarity, uniqueness or edition, foundry, quality, exhibition history, publication history, and current market demand can all materially affect value. Major unique sculptures, important Choupatte works, botanical furniture, chandeliers, mirrors, jewelry, and editioned objects may occupy very different areas of Lalanne’s market. Her market has achieved substantial prices, with major sculptures and objects attracting international collectors.
SELLING
Can you sell my Claude Lalanne for me?
Yes. We specialize in private sales but use every appropriate selling method to obtain the highest possible net price. We manage the process professionally, confidentially, and on your behalf.
Do I need an appraisal before selling my Claude Lalanne?
Yes. Your work should be priced correctly for the country, market, and method of sale. An independent appraisal helps prevent both underpricing and overpricing.
Do I need authentication before selling my Claude Lalanne?
Yes. Without authentication, your work may sell for only a fraction of its potential market value.
Can you help me maximize the selling price of my Claude Lalanne?
Yes. Authentication, provenance, valuation, timing, presentation, exhibition history, publication history, edition information, foundry documentation, and the chosen sales method can all influence the final result. We also provide collection management advice designed to maximize value.
Should I restore my Claude Lalanne before selling it?
Usually not. Original patinas, oxidation, gilding, silvering, electroplated surfaces, botanical textures, hardware, joins, and fabrication details can provide important evidence during authentication and may materially affect value. Polishing, replating, regilding, repainting, replacing hardware, or aggressively cleaning a work can alter historically significant surfaces. We generally recommend having the work evaluated before undertaking treatment.
How long does it take to sell a Claude Lalanne?
Higher-value works generally require more time to sell because there are fewer qualified buyers. Correct pricing, strong documentation, edition or foundry information, and the appropriate sales method all contribute to a successful sale.
BUYING & ADVISORY
Should I buy a Claude Lalanne?
If you enjoy Lalanne’s work, certainly. If your primary objective is investment, we can evaluate the proposed acquisition and alternative opportunities.
Can you review a Claude Lalanne before I buy it?
Yes. We provide independent pre-purchase research and analysis for collectors and investors. We also prepare predictive art market forecasts and Buy-Hold-Sell recommendations.
What should I check before buying a Claude Lalanne?
Three fundamental questions should always be answered: Is it authentic? What is its condition? Is the price reasonable? For Lalanne, the proposed date, material, dimensions, casting or fabrication technique, surface, patina, signature, monogram, edition number, foundry marks, provenance, exhibition history, publication history, and relationship to documented examples can all be particularly important.
How can I avoid buying a fake Claude Lalanne?
Call us before you buy. An independent review before completing the purchase is one of the simplest ways to reduce the risk of acquiring a forged, unauthorized, incorrectly editioned, later, reproduced, recast, or misattributed work.
Can you advise me on building a collection?
Yes. We advise collectors on the financial aspects of acquisition, ownership, collection management, and eventual sale.
