Circe and Odysseus

Hubert Maurer was an 18th century Dutch painter, who was originally trained in sculpture in Vienna by sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt. He studied painting under Anton Raphael Mengs in Rome. Art historians credit Maurer as being influential in the creation of altarpieces in Austria, Bavaria and the Czech Republic. He mainly created rococo-style compositions of religious or mythological figures.
