The Hours, Eternity and Death

Xavier Mellery was a Belgian Symbolist painter, who created dreamlike compositions, many of which were allegories of life and death. These sometimes nightmarish paintings were precursors for the Surrealist movement, and this combined with a Realist/Classical style became his calling card. Mellery was a member of the famed “Les Vingts” (AKA, Les XX or The Twenty), which were a group of avant-garde artists that took Europe by storm.

Mellery mentored and taught many artists during his lifetime, and was an inspiration for a whole generation of Surrealist painters. Today, Mellery’s paintings are housed all over the world, and perhaps in your own home.
