Aleksander Promet was an Estonian born in Narva, Estonia. Promet studied textile design at the St. Petersburg Art and Industry Academy. Promet received a scholarship to continue his studies in London, an opportunity he forfeited after leaving for Paris.

In 1906 Promet returned to Tartu where he established his own workshop. Promet was also an early member of the Estonian Art Association, initiated by Ants Laikmaa.

Promet began having solo exhibitions around 1909, promoting a body of work centered on Estonian folklore and the national epic Kalevipoeg. While many of his peers were interested in Neo-Romanticism, Promet maintained his interest in the traditional, rather than the avant-garde.
