Karl August Senff was a Baltic-German artist born in Kreypau, Prussia. Senff is best known for his paintings and etchings of the Imperial Russian Army. Senff began his artistic training at the Leipzip Academy of Arts. He continued his education at the Dresden Art Academy, where Senff continued to refine his painting and drawing skills.

In 1803 Senff became an associate professor at Dorpat University in what is present-day Tartu, Estonia. Senff eventually directed the art program at Dorpat, creating a lasting legacy at the institution.

Senff used his own etchings to publish a multi-volume textbook for his students, improving the university’s reputation. Senff also founded the university’s art program, training some of Estonia’s best-known artists.
