FÉLIX VALLOTTON

1865–1925

COULD YOUR ARTWORK BE BY FÉLIX VALLOTTON?

Previously unknown works by important artists continue to emerge from private collections, estates, inheritances, and long-held family possessions. While authentic works by Félix Vallotton may be uncommon, every work deserves to be evaluated on its own merits rather than dismissed simply because it is unfamiliar or undocumented.

If you believe your painting, drawing, woodcut, lithograph, illustration, sculpture, or other work may be by Félix Vallotton, obtaining an independent professional opinion is the appropriate first step. Born in Lausanne in 1865, Vallotton became one of the most distinctive artists working in Paris around 1900. He was a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor, and illustrator, and was naturalized French in 1900. His innovative black-and-white woodcuts brought him international recognition during the 1890s, while his paintings include portraits, interiors, nudes, landscapes, and still lifes.

We have specialized in the authentication of works attributed to Félix Vallotton since 2002. We issue Certificates of Authenticity (COAs), Authentication Reports, appraisals, valuations, provenance reports, and provide buying, selling, brokerage, and investment advisory services for collectors, attorneys, insurers, financial institutions, estates, museums, and private clients worldwide.

Getting started is straightforward. Simply send us photographs of the work together with its dimensions and any information you have regarding its history or ownership. After reviewing the material, we will recommend the most appropriate course of action.

AUTHENTICATION

Is this a Félix Vallotton?

From a single photograph of ordinary quality, we can often determine whether a work appears broadly consistent with Vallotton’s practice or whether it clearly does not. His oeuvre is highly varied, however, and includes sharply graphic woodcuts, portraits, psychologically charged interiors, landscapes, nudes, still lifes, drawings, and illustrations. A purported work must therefore be compared with securely documented examples from the appropriate period and medium rather than against a single generalized idea of his style.

What services do you provide?

We provide authentication, certification, Certificates of Authenticity (COAs), Authentication Reports, appraisals and valuations, provenance research, catalogue raisonné research, private sales and brokerage, investment advice, and analytical art market research.

Is it possible to discover a previously unknown Félix Vallotton today?

Potentially, yes. Paintings, drawings, prints, illustrations, and other works can remain in private collections, estates, inheritances, and family possessions without having been widely documented. However, substantial portions of Vallotton’s oeuvre have been catalogued extensively, including his paintings, printed graphic work, and illustrations. Any previously undocumented work should therefore be examined carefully against this existing scholarly record.

Do I need to get my Félix Vallotton authenticated?

Yes. Authentication is essential if you wish to sell your work for its full market value. It is also important for insurance, estate planning, charitable donations, financing, and many legal purposes.

Is it complicated to get a Félix Vallotton authenticated?

Not for you. For paintings, send photographs of the front and reverse, close-ups of the surface, signature, inscriptions, labels, canvas or panel, stretcher, edges, and other important details. For drawings and prints, include photographs of the complete sheet, reverse, margins, paper, signature, inscriptions, collector’s marks, publisher information, and any watermarks or stamps that may be visible. The investigation itself is our responsibility.

How long does it take to authenticate a Félix Vallotton?

It depends on how much is already known about the work when we begin the investigation. In straightforward cases, an initial assessment may be possible relatively quickly. More complex cases involving catalogue raisonné research, provenance reconstruction, print-state identification, archival documentation, or scientific examination may require considerably more work.

How much does it cost to authenticate a Félix Vallotton?

From the low hundreds to the high thousands. It depends on the type of work, existing documentation, the location of relevant archives and comparative material, and whether travel or scientific testing is required.

Can a signature alone prove that a Félix Vallotton is authentic?

No. A signature, date, inscription, or monogram cannot establish authorship by itself. These elements must be evaluated together with the materials, technique, support, dimensions, provenance, labels, physical characteristics, and relationship to securely documented works.

Can an unsigned Félix Vallotton still be authentic?

Potentially, yes. The absence of a signature does not by itself establish that a work is inauthentic. Materials, technique, proposed date, provenance, inscriptions, labels, and other available evidence must be considered together.

What documents help authenticate a Félix Vallotton work?

Any document that mentions, describes, illustrates, exhibits, sells, publishes, or otherwise records the work may assist authentication. Historic photographs, invoices, gallery records, correspondence, exhibition catalogues, collection inventories, conservation reports, insurance records, auction catalogues, printer or publisher documentation, collector’s marks, and family papers can all contribute valuable evidence.

Are there important archives relating to Félix Vallotton?

Yes. The Musée d’Orsay maintains an archival collection relating to Vallotton that is available to researchers by appointment. Its artist record identifies him as a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor, and illustrator and notes the museum’s documentary holdings concerning his career.

Can a Félix Vallotton work be authenticated from photographs?

Yes. High-quality photography is extremely useful for a first-stage assessment and allows us to study composition, brushwork, paint application, drawing technique, printing characteristics, paper, support, edges, reverse, signature, inscriptions, labels, and other details remotely. When additional evidence is required, physical examination may be recommended.

Was Félix Vallotton a member of the Nabis?

Yes. Vallotton became associated with the Nabis during the 1890s and was sometimes nicknamed the “foreign Nabi” because of his Swiss origins and somewhat independent position within the group. His work nevertheless remained highly individual, and his career also extended beyond the Nabi context toward approaches later compared with New Objectivity.

Why are woodcuts so important in Félix Vallotton’s career?

Vallotton’s woodcuts were crucial to his international reputation. During the 1890s he developed an extraordinarily economical black-and-white language based on bold silhouettes, large areas of unprinted paper, compressed space, and sharply observed social situations. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes his woodcuts of the period as innovative works that addressed modern urban life and political and social tensions.

Did Félix Vallotton make lithographs as well as woodcuts?

Yes. Vallotton’s graphic oeuvre includes both woodcuts and lithographs. His printed work has been systematically catalogued in Félix Vallotton: catalogue raisonné de l’œuvre gravé et lithographié by Maxime Vallotton and Charles Goerg, published in 1972.

Is there a catalogue raisonné of Félix Vallotton’s paintings?

Yes. Marina Ducrey, with Katia Poletti, produced the major catalogue raisonné Félix Vallotton (1865–1925). L’œuvre peint, published in 2005 in collaboration with the Fondation Félix Vallotton and the Swiss Institute for Art Research. It remains a fundamental reference for investigating paintings attributed to Vallotton.

Is there a catalogue raisonné of Félix Vallotton’s prints?

Yes. Vallotton’s engraved and lithographic work was catalogued by Maxime Vallotton and Charles Goerg in the 1972 catalogue raisonné of the printed graphic oeuvre. This reference is particularly important when researching impressions, states, dimensions, paper, and publication history.

Is there a catalogue raisonné of Félix Vallotton’s illustrations?

Yes. A new scholarly catalogue raisonné devoted to Vallotton’s illustrations was published in 2025 by Katia Poletti with Sarah Burkhalter and Nadine Franci, in collaboration between the Fondation Félix Vallotton and SIK-ISEA. The project documents more than a thousand illustrations created for periodicals, books, and other publications.

Why is catalogue raisonné research important for Félix Vallotton?

Because significant areas of Vallotton’s production have been systematically documented. Catalogue raisonné research can establish whether a work corresponds with a recorded title, date, medium, dimensions, exhibition history, provenance, or known impression. Absence from an existing catalogue does not automatically establish inauthenticity, but it makes additional research particularly important.

What subjects did Félix Vallotton paint?

Vallotton painted portraits, psychologically charged interiors, female nudes, landscapes, still lifes, bathing scenes, and other subjects. The Musée d’Orsay emphasizes that he repeatedly returned to interiors, toilettes, nudes, landscapes, and still lifes, often treating them with an enigmatic, cool, and highly controlled visual language.

Why are interiors important in Félix Vallotton’s work?

Vallotton’s interiors are among his most distinctive paintings. They frequently depict bourgeois domestic spaces in which relationships between figures remain ambiguous or psychologically tense. Flattened areas of color, unusual cropping, strong spatial divisions, and apparently detached observation often give these scenes an unsettling quality.

Did Félix Vallotton paint landscapes?

Yes. Landscape became increasingly important in his mature career. Museum collections preserve numerous examples from the 1910s and 1920s, including landscapes from Italy, France, and Switzerland. Vallotton frequently simplified natural forms into carefully structured compositions rather than treating landscape as direct plein-air transcription.

Why is print state important when authenticating a Félix Vallotton woodcut?

Because an image can survive in different states, proofs, lifetime impressions, later printings, or posthumous impressions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, for example, identifies an impression of The Shower as a trial proof on Japan paper that may be posthumous. Authentication therefore requires identifying not only the design but also the specific status of the individual impression.

Can a posthumous Vallotton print still be authentic?

It can be an authentic impression from Vallotton’s original block or plate while not being a lifetime impression personally supervised by the artist. Such distinctions can materially affect description, rarity, desirability, and value. The exact state, paper, printing history, and publication circumstances should therefore be established wherever possible.

Why is paper important when authenticating a Félix Vallotton print?

Paper can provide valuable evidence concerning printing history and date. Vallotton’s documented woodcuts occur on different papers, including laid paper and various Japanese papers. Sheet dimensions, texture, watermark, trimming, aging, and relationship to catalogued impressions can all help distinguish a period impression from a later reproduction.

What should be examined when authenticating a Félix Vallotton print?

The exact composition, printing technique, block or image dimensions, sheet dimensions, paper, signature or monogram, state, proof status, printer or publisher, inscriptions, collector’s marks, condition, and catalogue raisonné references should all be examined.

Did Félix Vallotton also work as an illustrator?

Extensively. Illustration was a major part of his career and helped establish his reputation in Paris. His drawings appeared in periodicals, books, and other publications, often addressing modern life, politics, literature, and social observation. The 2025 catalogue raisonné of his illustrations documents this field systematically for the first time.

Did Félix Vallotton make sculpture?

Yes. Although much less famous than his painting and printmaking, sculpture formed part of Vallotton’s practice. The Musée d’Orsay identifies him explicitly as a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor, and illustrator.

Why is the date important when authenticating a Félix Vallotton?

Vallotton’s career changed considerably over time. His 1890s woodcuts and Nabi-associated paintings differ substantially from many of his later portraits, interiors, landscapes, nudes, and still lifes. He also reduced his emphasis on printmaking after establishing himself as a painter. A purported work should therefore be compared with securely documented examples from the proposed period.

Is it always necessary to perform scientific analyses of a Félix Vallotton?

No. Many works can initially be evaluated through catalogue raisonné research, provenance investigation, archival documentation, stylistic comparison, print research, and technical examination. Scientific testing of pigments, binders, canvas, board, paper, inks, wood, grounds, or other materials may be appropriate when questions remain concerning age or composition.

What if my Félix Vallotton has no provenance?

Incomplete provenance does not automatically mean that a work is inauthentic. However, because substantial areas of Vallotton’s oeuvre are well documented, missing provenance increases the importance of catalogue research, archival investigation, technical examination, labels, collector’s marks, historical photographs, and comparison with securely documented works.

Do you issue Certificates of Authenticity for Félix Vallotton works?

Yes. Upon completion of our authentication process, when the evidence supports attribution, we issue a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) together with a detailed and fully referenced Authentication Report.

APPRAISALS & VALUATIONS

How much is my Félix Vallotton worth?

We will appraise your work and determine its value. Date, medium, dimensions, subject, quality, condition, provenance, catalogue raisonné status, exhibition history, literature, rarity, print state where applicable, and current market demand are important valuation factors. Major paintings, drawings, lifetime woodcut impressions, proofs, lithographs, later impressions, illustrations, and sculptures occupy different market categories and should be valued accordingly.

SELLING

Can you sell my Félix Vallotton for me?

Yes. We specialize in private sales but use every appropriate selling method to obtain the highest possible net price. We manage the process professionally, confidentially, and on your behalf.

Do I need an appraisal before selling my Félix Vallotton?

Yes. Your work should be priced correctly for its medium, period, quality, condition, documentation, market, and method of sale. An independent appraisal helps prevent both underpricing and overpricing.

Do I need authentication before selling my Félix Vallotton?

Yes. Authentication and catalogue raisonné documentation can have a substantial effect on marketability and value. For prints, precise identification of state, paper, and whether the impression is lifetime or later can also be critical.

Can you help me maximize the selling price of my Félix Vallotton?

Yes. Authentication, catalogue raisonné research, provenance, exhibition history, literature, print-state research, condition, valuation, timing, presentation, and the chosen sales method can all influence the final result.

Should I restore my Félix Vallotton before selling it?

Usually not. Original paint surfaces, paper, margins, signatures, labels, collector’s marks, backing materials, and other physical characteristics may preserve important evidence for authentication and condition assessment. We generally recommend having the work evaluated before cleaning, relining, bleaching, trimming, varnish removal, retouching, remounting, or other treatment.

How long does it take to sell a Félix Vallotton?

Higher-value works generally require more preparation because sophisticated collectors and institutions expect strong documentation. Authentication, catalogue research, provenance investigation, condition assessment, valuation, and selection of the appropriate market should normally be completed first.

BUYING & ADVISORY

Should I buy a Félix Vallotton?

If you enjoy Vallotton’s work, certainly. If your primary objective is investment, we can evaluate the proposed acquisition and alternative opportunities.

Can you review a Félix Vallotton before I buy it?

Yes. We provide independent pre-purchase research and analysis for collectors and investors. We also prepare predictive art market forecasts and Buy-Hold-Sell recommendations.

What should I check before buying a Félix Vallotton?

Three fundamental questions should always be answered: Is it authentic? What is its condition? Is the price reasonable? You should also examine the proposed date, medium, dimensions, support, provenance, catalogue raisonné status, signature and inscriptions, labels, exhibition history, literature, restoration history, and relationship to securely documented works. For prints, paper, state, proof status, publisher, dimensions, and impression quality require particular attention.

How can I avoid buying a fake Félix Vallotton?

Call us before you buy. Do not rely solely on a signature, stark black-and-white design, Nabi-style composition, psychologically charged interior, or resemblance to Vallotton’s familiar imagery. His woodcuts and paintings have been widely reproduced. Independent examination of materials, technique, paper or support, provenance, catalogue raisonné records, print state where applicable, archival evidence, and comparison with securely documented works can substantially reduce the risk of acquiring a forgery, reproduction, later impression incorrectly described as lifetime, or other misattributed work.

Can you advise me on building a collection?

Yes. We advise collectors on the financial aspects of acquisition, ownership, collection management, and eventual sale.
