Varo often developed elaborate compositions through preparatory drawings or full-scale cartoons before transferring them to prepared supports. The Art Institute of Chicago has documented her use of cartoons to transfer compositions and notes that some surviving preparatory drawings were subsequently developed further after the transfer process.

What materials did Remedios Varo use?

Varo used a wide range of materials, including oil paint, gouache, pencil, graphite, colored chalk, collage, tracing paper, cardstock, canvas, plywood, and hardboard or Masonite-type supports. The National Gallery of Art, for example, owns the 1962 painting Banqueros en acción in oil on fiberboard together with a related graphite drawing on tracing paper.

Did Remedios Varo frequently paint on Masonite or hardboard?

Yes. Many documented mature paintings were executed on Masonite or similar hardboard supports, although she also worked on canvas, plywood, paper, and other materials. Support type should therefore be evaluated in relation to the proposed date and work rather than used as a stand-alone test.

What is decalcomania, and did Remedios Varo use it?

Yes. Decalcomania involves pressing material against a freshly painted or inked surface and lifting it away to create textured patterns. Although Surrealists often used the technique to introduce chance, research by the Art Institute of Chicago indicates that Varo frequently employed it in a deliberate, controlled manner, particularly to create organic textures such as trees and foliage.

Did Remedios Varo use grattage?
