Michael Wutky was a well-known Austrian landscape painter of the 18th century. Born in Krems, Wutky lived in Vienna for much of his life. Wutky was interested in art from an early age and enrolled at the Vienna Academy in 1759, where he studied painting under the instructor Mytens the Younger.
Wutky spent several, formative years living in Italy and enjoyed extended periods of time painting in Rome, where he lived from 1776 to 1801. Wutky also made regular trips within Europe to Naples, Budapest, Prague and Warsaw.
Wutky was a teaching artist, employed by his alma mater, the Vienna Academy. He worked and instructed in the late Baroque manner of painting, which focused on idealized landscapes. Wutky loved painting in nature and spent much of his free time in the outdoors. He was a skilled painter of cascades and woods but preferred the challenge and intensity of painting volcanic eruptions. Wulky frequented the active volcano Mount Vesuvius, located near Naples, Italy. He accompanied the English scientist William Hamilton in his volcanic expeditions, venturing dangerously close to volcanic craters. Hamilton’s expeditions have since been revered for their scientific findings.
Wutky’s paintings are now in museums and private collections throughout Europe and the United States. Wutky is most remembered for his impressive depictions of volcanic eruptions and contributions to the Vienna Academy.
