Cat Stealing the Fish

Giovanni Crivelli was an Italian painter and the son of the well known painter Angelo Maria Crivelli. The elder Crivelli was a very successful Milanese still life and bird painter, and had two sons (Giovanni and Jacopo) who followed in his footsteps. The sons work matches the father’s in quality. Separating the three is by no means easy, due to the fact that their compositions were so similar and that few works were signed.

Hunting Dog and Game

Being exceptionally popular in their time, the Crivelli’s spawned many imitators. The followers rarely attained the mastery of the Crivelli’s, however, and there is usually little difficulty in distinguishing them from their followers.

Lupo Aggredito da Cani

The Crivelli’s followed the tradition of their time in style and composition. Typically the backgrounds are imaginary landscapes analogous to Capriccios. These form nothing more than a broad setting for the foreground action. The Crivelli’s manifest a kind of organized, directed realism in a Romantic framework. The care and pride in verisimilitude of the animal and bird portraits is obvious, as is the casualness of the misty backgrounds. In a world of urbanized peasantry, almost all Italians were close to the barnyard, if not the soil. The buyers of this art were of course wealthy urbanites, but they too would have had strong rural roots. They no doubt appreciated the realistic yet sentimental portrayal of everyday farm creatures.
